"Backyard Birding Basics" Presentation and Fall Hike
with Maine Audubon - September 19, 2026
Join us for an afternoon among friends and nature at our annual Highland Green Fall hike and bird presentation “Backyard Birding Basics” lead by birding expert and Maine Audubon Advocacy & Outreach Manager, Nick Lund.
2 – 3 PM Join Maine Audubon Advocacy & Outreach Manager, Nick Lund at the Highland Green Ecology Center for a fun, informative presentation on “Backyard Birding Basics.”
3 – 4 PM Participate in a guided hike or forge your own way on the well-groomed trails on the Cathance River Nature Preserve. The trail network includes a short, but breathtaking hike to the Cathance River as well as longer and more challenging trails.

Backyard Birding Basics: Your backyard provides a window into the natural world and there are a number of steps you can take to make it wildlife-friendly. Learn best practices for attracting and supporting birds in your yard throughout the winter. We’ll answer questions like: Does feeding birds change their migration habits? Will they starve if you stop feeding them? Why are native plants so important for birds’ survival?
About Nick Lund: Nick is Maine Audubon’s Advocacy and Outreach Manager. He is a birder and bird writer, the other books including The ABA Field Guide to the Birds of Maine, Dinosaurs to Chickens: How Evolution Works, and The Ultimate Biography of Earth and with articles appearing in Slate.com, Washington Post, National Geographic, and other outlets.
