The Cathance River empties into Merrymeeting Bay, which is in Highland Green’s “backyard” and is at the heart of an internationally renowned watershed through which 40 percent of all water flowing through Maine travels before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. This bay is home to plentiful wildlife and plant life, including wild rice, bald eagles, osprey, heron and harbor seals.
Highland Green residents can canoe and kayak all the way from the Head of Tide on the Cathance River to Merrymeeting Bay. You can see Highland Green residents Lew and Mary Brown’s favorite kayak and canoeing spots in the Highland Green Paddler’s Guide.
