May 2017: Once again, teams of HG residents took top honors in all categories at the Scrabble Fest tournament held in Augusta. Two squads swept the competitive division and social division at the April event that benefited Literacy Volunteers.
Cy and Gail Kendrick won the competitive division while Nancy Johnson, Rick Diamond, George Heilig and Ruth McCrea prevailed in the social division. The HG sides were rewarded with a supply of whoopie pies for besting ten other teams and the contest raised nearly $3,000 for the charity.
Nancy Johnson moved here from San Diego, California in 2016 after retiring from a global insurance brokerage. Originally from Massachusetts, she has enjoyed getting accustomed once again to four distinct seasons and the relaxing pace of Maine after decades of urban living and monotonous weather. She has also recently joined a garden club.
Nancy’s husband George Heilig is the captain of the HG Hockey Team which last competed in the New England Pond Hockey Classic in Rangeley. The members play pick-up games indoors throughout the year. His hockey nickname is Crusher.
Cy and Gail Kendrick, a retired engineer and former pastor respectively, moved to HG from Townsend, Massachusetts in 2007. They recently completed a series of presentations to interested HG residents about their 2016 four month around-the-world cruise.
Rick Diamond moved to HG in 2013 with his wife Barbara and his mother-in-law Jane from right up the road in Topsham. He works as a consulting actuary and also serves on the HG Reserve Analysis Committee, helping to protect the strength and stability of the residents’ financial reserve planning.
Ruth McCrea, a former editor in New York City, moved to HG just a couple of months ago from East Hampton, New York. She has already participated in HG friendship dinners, joined an HG bocce team, and become an HG marketing ambassador.
