It was a clean sweep as two teams of Highland Green residents recently prevailed in a statewide Scrabble Tournament in Augusta, Maine that benefited literacy programs. Liz Lee of Red Maple Lane and Elizabeth Cole of Warbler Drive finished first in the Social Division while Gail and Cy Kendrick of Finch Drive prevailed in the Competitive Division.
Tournaments take place three times a year and are sponsored by Literacy Volunteers Augusta and Literacy Volunteers of Androscoggin County. The Kendricks have enjoyed multiple wins. That Liz and Elizabeth came out on top in their first competition should come as no surprise. Liz is a lifelong word-buff from England. Elizabeth is a trained linguist (and runs the etymology class at the Highland Green Community Center with Liz’s husband Elliott).
The winning teams received the satisfaction of helping to promote and fund literacy in Maine and also received a dozen whoopie pies each. For those who don’t know, the whoopie pie is the Official State Treat of Maine (not to be confused with the Official State Dessert, which is blueberry pie). They are (in Maine parlance) wicked good!
